In 1825 Pleasant and Mary Granberry (Allen) Thurman along with their young son Allen moved from Lynchburg Va. to
Chillicothe,Ohio and bought the property at 30 Western Avenue. Mary Thurman's younger brother William Allen moved
from Va. To live with his sister Mary and family in the year of 1819.
William Allen studied law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar Association on his 21st birthday. He later became
Governor of the state of Ohio.
Allen Thurman in 1835 became a member of the bar association and became a partner with William Allen in his law firm.
Allen was nominated in 1867 by the Democratic Party as its candidate for Governor of the state of Ohio against
Rutherford B Hayes, but lost by less than 3000 votes. He was later elected to the Federal Senate. He retired in 1881
at his home located at 45 West 5th Street now the Ross County Museum.
On July 4th. 1859 conveyed to Reinhart Wissler the property at 30 Western Avenue. Reinhart and his wife Catherine
were native of Germany and came to America as young children. They married in Chillicothe Ohio and in 1857
purchased the Brewery behind 30 Western Ave, which became known as Wissler's Brewery.
The Wissler's had 10 children; 5 sons; Otto, George, Charles, Reinhart Jr. and Albert. The 5 daughters were Elise,
Dora, Anna, Emma and Katheryn.
The iron work on the home was ordered from Spain and supposedly took 20 years to arrive being added after Reinhart
Sr's death in 1885. Otto and George bought the brewery 6 months prior to Reinhart's death in 1885 and were
operating the brewery in 1902 producing 5000 barrels per year all sold on the local market. They had 8 employees and
sold to wholesale trade only. During prohibition they converted to soda pop. Somewhere in the 1930's business
dropped and the brewery was torn down.
The property remained in the Wissler family occupied exclusively by the Wisslers until 1961 and only 3 families have
occupied the property since then.
In the year of 1989 Henry and Kathryn Galloway bought the property at 30 Western Avenue. It being in somewhat of
a disarray managed to, within a few years, turn the home into a beautiful bed and breakfast keeping the historic
architect, atmosphere and decor, then named it Victoria Manor after their daughter "Vicki".
Several years after the kids left, Henry passed (1989), but Kathryn maintained and ran the business as usual. Six
years after Henry's death Mike and Kathryn in March of 2004 found each other. After several months they decided to
get together, update the landscaping and do a few small interior projects, still keeping with the historic nature of the
home. Kathryn and Mike both have great cooking and landscaping skills of their own preference and wanted to keep
the home as a Bed and Breakfast.
Mike, previously owning a landscaping business in Florida, found the 2 acre property a great challenge in putting his
skills to work.
Kathryn, knowing her flowers and plants as she does, helped Mike understand the difference in Florida and Ohio
plants and flowers. Together they make a great partnership in the operation of Victoria Manor Bed and Breakfast.
